Whiringa-ā-nuku / October

courtney-selmaKia ora and welcome to our Whiringa-ā-nuku update, with a new cartoon by Helen Courtney.

On the News page we cover a bombshell in the AfterEllen website for queer women, and profile our last takatāpui local body candidate for Aotearoa. You can also read about InsideOUT’s multi-media arts competition for queer and trans youth, a scholarship for a Rainbow community student next year, the Charlotte Museum changes in Auckland, the Nouveau Party in Christchurch, an Alphabet Soup hui for youthworkers in Dunedin, and the establishment of a new trust for LGBTIQ people in Otago.

We have updates on funding problems for a couple of Women’s Centres (and others may have similar problems – do let us know), and information about a national people’s mental health review, something we encourage lesbians to participate in.

On our media page, we review the Her Story lesbian and trans webseries and review a book about north American feminist bookshops and lesbian antiracism.

We have two stories on our people page: an obituary of Carol Bartlett, and a profile of Jenny Ryan, running a cycle tour business in Hawkes Bay.

And check out Dyke Diary – we update this whenever new events come in. We include women’s and other events of interest to lesbians – do send us your suggestions for other local, regional, or national women’s/lesbian events we should be listing.

See our Services page for classified ads and businesses, currently free. Email us your Dyke Diary, Social and Support group updates and we’ll put them online as quickly as possible. We welcome comments (at the bottom of every page) and contributions. Thanks!
